Crossplay question

I just got a Minecraft server from a host to leave up for my friends but one of them has Xbox Minecraft apparently and no one knows how to get him onto the server.
We know the game is somewhat crossplay but we are lost.
I've read that crossplay is only possible if the server is Windows10 Edition (also called Bedrock Edition).
